From 15 to 18 October, Valencia will once again become a meeting point for fitness enthusiasts with a new edition of HYROX Valencia, taking place at Feria Valencia. The event returns for its fifth consecutive year, featuring a range of categories and formats for individual competitors, doubles, Pro athletes and relay teams.

The programme will begin on Thursday 15 October with the Individual and Doubles categories, while Friday 16 October will see the addition of the Pro and Relay categories. On Saturday 17 October, it will be the turn of male athletes, Mixed Doubles and Pro Doubles, before the competition comes to a close on Sunday 18 October with the Women’s and Doubles events.

Here’s everything you need to know about one of the most popular fitness competitions of the moment.

What is HYROX?

HYROX is a fitness competition that combines running and functional exercises in a standardised format. Unlike other sporting events, every HYROX race follows the same structure, regardless of the city in which it takes place. This allows participants to compare their times with athletes from around the world and feature in a global ranking.

The competition begins with a 1-kilometre run, followed by a functional workout. This combination is repeated eight times, for a total of 8 kilometres of running and 8 functional workout stations.

Events are held in large indoor arenas, where athletes compete in an environment specially designed for the occasion, with spectators able to follow the action up close.

What does a HYROX race involve?

Each participant must complete eight blocks, each consisting of a 1-kilometre run followed by one functional workout station. The eight stations are:

1 km run + 1,000 m SkiErg

1 km run + 50 m Sled Push

1 km run + 50 m Sled Pull

1 km run + 80 m Burpee Broad Jumps

1 km run + 1,000 m Row

1 km run + 200 m Farmer’s Carry

1 km run + 100 m Sandbag Lunges

1 km run + 100 Wall Balls

The combination of endurance, strength and functional fitness makes HYROX a demanding all-round challenge. Being a strong runner or excelling at weightlifting alone is not enough: competitors need to perform across a wide range of disciplines.

HYROX Categories

One of HYROX’s defining features is the variety of competition formats available to suit different types of participants. Athletes can take part individually, as a pair or as part of a relay team.

HYROX Individual

This is the classic format, in which each athlete completes all eight kilometres of running and the eight functional workout stations on their own. The format includes men’s and women’s categories, as well as different age groups.

HYROX Pro

The Pro category is aimed at more experienced athletes and features heavier loads than the Open category. It also includes men’s and women’s divisions and gives participants the opportunity to compete for a place in the global rankings.

HYROX Doubles

In this format, two athletes complete the competition together. Both participants complete the running sections and share the work at the functional workout stations, making it possible to take on the challenge as a team. The available categories are Doubles Men, Doubles Women and Doubles Mixed, depending on the composition of the pair.

HYROX Relays

Relay teams are made up of four participants, who divide the running sections and workout stations between them. It is an especially appealing option for anyone looking to experience the HYROX format as part of a team.

HYROX Youngstars

HYROX also offers a format specifically designed for younger participants: HYROX Youngstars, aimed at athletes aged 8 to 15.
