Every September, La Concha Bay becomes the setting for one of the most traditional open-water swimming events in San Sebastián. On Saturday, 12 September, the 82nd edition of the Kontxa Badiako Igerialdia will take place, a swimming race that has been held in the city since 1943 and brings together swimmers of different ages and ability levels. Are you ready to take the plunge?
General information about the La Concha Swim
The Kontxa Badiako Igerialdia, the swimming race across La Concha Bay, is one of the most traditional open-water swimming events in San Sebastián. The 82nd edition will bring together swimmers of different ages and levels for a day dedicated to open-water swimming.
There are three different categories adapted to different types of participants: a children’s race for athletes aged between 11 and 14; Emakumeok Mugimenduan, an initiative exclusively for women with two distances available; and the open category. All three events will start and finish at the jetty of the Real Club Náutico de San Sebastián.
The La Concha Swim is also the final event of the Gipuzkoa Open Water Swimming League and is organised by Club Natación Easo, in collaboration with the Real Club Náutico de San Sebastián, the Gipuzkoa Swimming Federation and Donostia Kirola.
Children’s race at the La Concha Swim
The day will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the children’s race, aimed at athletes aged between 11 and 14. It is a mixed event, with boys and girls competing on the same course.
The race will start from the Náutico jetty and participants will have to swim around two buoys, keeping them on their left, before returning to the starting point. In total, they will cover 0.4 nautical miles, approximately 740 metres.
Emakumeok Mugimenduan
At 11:30 a.m., it will be time for Emakumeok Mugimenduan, a women-only event designed to introduce open-water swimming to those taking part in this type of competition for the first time.
The initiative offers a shorter course and an environment designed to help participants enjoy the experience with greater safety and confidence. There will be two races with staggered starts, covering 350 and 740 metres, respectively.
Open race at the La Concha Swim
The open race will feature three staggered starts at five-minute intervals, organised according to the times provided by participants during registration. The course will cover 1.2 nautical miles, approximately 2,220 metres, and swimmers must keep the buoys on their left throughout the route.
Participants will have a maximum of 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete the course. Once this time limit has been exceeded, the organisation’s boats will collect any swimmers who have not yet reached the finish line.
Registration for the La Concha Swim
Registration for the 82nd edition of the La Concha Swim will remain open until 7 September at 11:59 p.m. The entry fee for the open race is €35, while registration for the children’s category costs €20. For Emakumeok Mugimenduan, both the 350-metre and 740-metre courses are priced at €5.
If you would like to take part in this classic open-water swimming event, don’t leave it until the last minute. Register now and get ready to swim across La Concha Bay.
Services for participants
Participants will be able to collect their race pack on the day of the event from 9:00 a.m. in the Náutico area. Everyone will receive a swimming cap and commemorative T-shirt featuring an exclusive design for this edition, as well as the corresponding timing chip for the competition.
A bag-drop service will be available during the event, where swimmers can leave their belongings. The organisers will provide a numbered bag, which will be kept safely while participants are in the water.
There will be no changing rooms in the area, although a shower arch will be available at the exit, along with additional showers installed on the walkway so swimmers can rinse off the salt after completing the course. At the finish, there will also be broth, drinks, soft drinks, fruit and refreshments to help participants recover after the race.
