5 TOWNS TO VISIT IN MALLORCA

Valldemossa

Valldemossa is probably the most frequently visited town in Mallorca. It is located in the western part of the island, just 20 kilometres from the centre of Palma. It is an ideal place to explore at your own pace, either with your family or as a couple.

Between the lush greenery and the jagged mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana lies a village with small stone terraced houses and steep, narrow streets featuring a 14th century Carthusian monastery whose tower is topped with a distinctive turquoise roof, the Cartoixa de Valldemossa, one of the main attractions of the town.

Their stay in the Mallorcan town inspired the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin and his lover, the French writer George Sand, who spent the winter of 1838 lodging at the Cartoixa de Valldemossa. Chopin composed most of his twenty-four preludes there, including Raindrop, and Sand wrote the book Winter in Mallorca.

Besides these artists, over the years writers like Jovellanos, Azorín, Rubén Darío, Miguel de Unamuno, Santiago Rusiñol and Jorge Luis Borges have also visited this landmark town.

Sóller

Sóller is one of those island towns that seem to belong to a bygone era. Located at the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, it is within 30 kilometres of the Mallorcan capital.

The best way to explore this landmark town with its cobbled streets is to ride its iconic wooden train, which has been running since 1921 and connects the towns of Palma and Sóller with a route through mountains and valleys. French-style palaces stand alongside modernist buildings and the large baroque church of Sant Bartomeu, located at the heart of the town.

There is a healthy demand for handicrafts in Sóller, so if you want to buy local items, this is the place to do it. You must also try one of Sóller’s most famous products, the Sóller canoneta orange, the local variety best known for the quality and abundance of its juice.

Deià

This town on the north-western flank of the Serra de Tramuntana combines the best of the sea and mountains, making it one of the most sought-after and expensive places on the island of Mallorca. Deià is some 30 kilometres from Palma and it borders on the towns of Valldemossa, Sóller and Brunyola.

An ideal spot for anyone seeking Mallorca’s quieter side. Picturesque stone houses and winding streets surrounded by mountains and lush greenery. Some of the best views are from the walkways around the village. Two of the town’s must-see attractions are the 16th-century parish church of Sant Joan and the 17th-century Municipal Cemetery.

Another of Deià’s big attractions is the cove that lies at the mouth of the Torrent Major. A small pebbled beach with crystal-clear water that is well worth a visit, although we advise against visiting during the summer season as it tends to get overcrowded.

Pollença

In the north of the island of Mallorca stands the idyllic Balearic town of Pollença. It is about 60 kilometres from the centre of Palma and just a stone’s throw from the town of Alcúdia.

The birthplace of the poet Miquel Costa i Llobera, its picturesque streets have also been graced by the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the writer Agatha Christie and the actor Peter Ustinov.

In the town’s main square you will find one of its main attractions, the parish church of Déu dels Àngels. However, you get the best panoramic views of Pollença by climbing up to El Calvari, a small chapel located at the top of the town.

If you’re a fan of water sports, you ought to know that Port de Pollença is one of the most popular areas for sailing, paddle surfing and kitesurfing. Just a few kilometres away, at the northernmost point of the island, is the legendary Cap de Formentor, one of the island’s must-visit places to watch the sunset in the Balearic Islands.

Banyalbufar

Banyalbufar is a picturesque and quiet spot amidst the mountains where you can relax by the sea. Despite its exceptional location between the sea and the mountains, it is the least touristy of the towns mentioned above.

Banyalbufar’s landscape is notable for its distinctive and characteristic staggered terraces, which were mainly used to grow tomatoes and produce wine. Talking of wine, in establishments like Son Vives and Ca’n Pico you can enjoy its acclaimed Malvasia wines.

Any part of the town offers a stunning place to watch the sunset, from the breathtaking views of the mountains to the coves of Banyalbufar, Es Corral Fals and Son Bunyola.
